Where is Pisa?

When you are wondering Where is Pisa first of all you should know that it is a capital of Pisa province in Tuscany.

Pisa, Italy is located on the banks of the Arno River, on the plain area between the Pisano mountains and the Ligurian Sea. Pisa is situated just 12 km away from the sea.

Tourist attractions of Pisa include famous architectural buildings and famous works of art. Main Pisa sightseeing are located on the so called Square of Miracles. This square is situated on the north-west of the old city, near the medieval city walls.

At the impressive size of the green meadow, towering cathedral, bell tower, known as the "leaning tower", baptistery and cemetery, created between the middle and the middle of XI XI centuries.

The world famous Miracles Square of Pisa is a beautiful green field covered by the soft grass, and it contains three main architectural sightseeing.

Where is the tower of Pisa?
The Leaning Tower was designed many centuries ago as a Campanile - a free-standing bell tower of Pisa Cathedral. Although designed to be standing vertically, the tower started to lean the southeast direction shortly after its construction began.

The leaning happened due to the Pisa tower location when heavy layers of marble have been placed on the unstable soil which was a problem for many architects for more than eight hundred years.

How tall is the tower of Pisa?
Pisa tower height is 55 meters. Although initially planned to be a 70 meter high bell tower, height of the leaning tower didn't reach the plan because of its design.

When was the Leaning tower of Pisa built?
Pisa tower construction was started in 1173 by Bonanno Pisano and was completed at the end of the XIV century by Tommaso Pisano. The construction works of Pisa tower had to stop due to precipitation of the soil.

Did You Know That..? Galileo Tower Experiment

The famous leaning tower of Pisa Italy of 55 meters high was used by the famous scientist Galileo Galilei for his experiments about free falling.

Galileo dragged objects of varios weight to the top of the Leaning Tower and dropped them down.

Shortly after the experiments Galileo Galilei made a report, making a conclusion that objects of different weight fall with the same speed.

 

Cathedral (Duomo)

Cathedral of Pisa is a typical Roman church built in the XII - XIII centuries. Even with its decorated facade and the marble gallery, externally the Pisa Cathedral is not very impressive.

Inside the Cathedral consists of three chapels separated by granite columns.

Baptistery

Pisa Baptistery is located behind the Cathedral on the Miracle Square.

Baptistery of Pisa built in the XIII century has great mixture of different architectural styles such as Roman and Gothic. Baptistery is an octagonal building with facades made of white and green marble.

Cemetery Camposanto

The built of the Cemetery of Pisa started in 1278 by Giovanni di Simone. Pisa cemetery of Italy was supposed to be a cemetery for the outstanding and most influential people in the city.

Camposanto cemetery facade is laid with white marble decorated with blind arches. Inside the cemetery is a rectangular area with arches on one side, various tombs and frescos having a Gothic look.

There are not so many shops in Pisa. Most of the shops are concentrated on Corso Italia (more affordable Pisa shopping) and Borgo Stretto (elegant and expensive brands shopping) streets.

Getting to Pisa

Pisa Italy airport Galileo Galilei is situated 2 km south from the city, and provides plenty of flights to Pisa from other Italian cities, from Europe and from all over the world. Flying to Pisa can be very inexpensive since there are varios low cost airlines operating in Galileo Galilei airport (like Ryanair, for instance).

Getting to Pisa airport is possible by train departing from the main Pisa train station. Trains to Pisa airport departure every 10 minutes and are very affordable (about 1 Euro).

Another way of getting from the airport to the center and vice versa is taking a taxi which is a bit more expensive than traveling by rail.

Getting from Florence to Pisa and
back by Rail

Getting from Pisa to Florence and from Florence to Pisa by train will take you about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and these trains departure many times a day. A train from Pisa will take you directly to the Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence (Firenze SMN) which is located next to the Florence SITA bus terminal, where it's possible to take a bus to the rest of Tuscany.

Getting from Livorno to Pisa and back

Train from Livorno to Pisa is going very frequently, costs only 2 Euro and has trip duration of only 15 minutes. Moreover, it's also easy to get from Livorno to Pisa and back by bus which goes about every 30 minutes, but traveling to Pisa by bus will take you longer than by train - about 45 minutes. You can take a bus to Pisa on Piazza Grande in Livorno.
