Using Credit Cards, ATMs, Travelers Checks and Money Exchange

Money Exchange in Italy

Money exchange in Italy can be done in any bank, on a post office or at a currency exchange office. Currency exchange offices can be found anywhere in the city on big streets.

As a rule, best exchange rates of Italy money are offered by the banks and post-offices. Local money exchange offices in Italy tend to have higher commission rates.

Exchanging money in Italy in banks and currency exchange offices can be limited by their currency assortment, and some currencies are almost impossible to exchange.

In this case you can use airport exchange points of Italy money which are normally open 24 hours a day although these offer less interesting currency exchange rates.

Italian money exchange rates of the basic currencies are published daily in large newspapers.

Banks opening hours in Italy are normally from 8:30 to 13:30 in the morning and from 15:00 to 16:30 in the afternoon on working days. Banks are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Major Italian banks are Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL), UniCredit, Cassa di Risparmio and Credito Italiano.

Currency exchange offices in Italy are also open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Credit Card Italy

Many restaurants, hotels, shops and supermarkets accept using credit cards in Italy. The places where one can pay with a credit card in Italy are clearly marked with a sign "Carta - si" or logos of accepted cards on a front door. See a picture on the right as an example.

Most of small gasoline stations prefer a cash money payment, whilst on large motor ways and historical parts of cities you can find many gas stations accepting credit card payments.

Best credit card to use in Italy is Visa, Master Card, American Express, Diners Club and Carte Blanche.

Italy ATM Machines

ATM machines in Italy you can find everywhere, including small towns and villages which makes using ATMs in Italy easy and convenient.

ATMs in Italy are clearly marked with a sign "Bancomat".

However some banks collect high ATM fees when dispensing Italy money (from 2,5 % to 4 %).

Travelers Checks Italy

International travelers checks in Italy are accepted in most of the large shops, restaurants, rental offices and other large institutions.

I recommend using travelers checks in Euro or UK pounds in order to avoid additional costs connected with variations of exchange rates in Italy. Checks in US dollars, unfortunately, are difficult to exchange or to pay with.
